Plug-in panels produce modest amounts of electricity – around 800 watts, enough to power appliances like fridges and devices left on standby. While this may be sufficient for some households, it’s unlikely to make a significant dent in energy bills. Government research suggests that households could save between £70 and £110 per year by using plug-in panels, but this figure depends on factors such as panel orientation, sunlight exposure, and the time of day they’re used.
The safety concerns surrounding plug-in panels are significant. British Gas has downplayed the potential risks, stating that these systems can “meaningfully reduce how much electricity you need to buy during the daytime.” However, experts warn that older properties or those with unknown electrical wiring may be more susceptible to hazards. Electrical Safety First advises consumers to have their electrics checked by a registered electrician before buying panels and never connect them through extension leads or plug-in adaptors.
Manufacturers are still required to meet industry standards (G98) and government product specifications, even though they’re no longer subject to the MCS. This ensures that these systems operate safely within the grid.
As energy security becomes increasingly important, plug-in solar panels offer a tantalizing solution – but one that should be approached with caution.
