Hugging Face’s latest creation, the Microduck, is a 25cm-tall, two-pound robot with a depth sensor and camera that can walk, sit, crouch, and roll-skate. Its purpose is to prove that robots don’t have to be human-like to win our hearts.

The designers of the Microduck are onto something here. Humanoid robots like Boston Dynamics’ Spot are capable of remarkable feats but often fail to elicit the same emotional response as a dog or child. This isn’t just because they’re “creepy” – it’s more fundamental than that: humans have an instinctive distrust of things that look too much like themselves but don’t quite behave like them.

The Uncanny Valley and the Power of Cuteness
