They offer dependable performance – perfect for casual users who just want to stream shows without worrying about buffering. As our reliance on internet-connected devices grows, so does the need for faster speeds and more capacity.
Tri-band routers boast an additional 5GHz band, and in some cases, a new 6GHz channel. Proponents claim that this extra bandwidth is the key to unlocking seamless performance, even in demanding environments. However, it’s not quite so simple. The 2.4GHz band may have a longer range but slower speeds and greater susceptibility to interference from nearby devices make it less desirable.
In contrast, 5GHz offers fast and relatively free-of-interference data transmission but with a shorter range that can leave you stranded if not careful. The new 6GHz band promises to be the fastest of all – a veritable racing strip for data transmission. Yet, few devices currently support this frequency, making it like trying to ride a road bike in the wrong gear: you might have the power, but you’re not going anywhere.
For most users, a dual-band router will continue to suffice. It’s only when talking about mesh networks that tri-band routers begin to make more sense.

As the market continues to evolve, manufacturers will keep pushing the boundaries of what we expect from our routers.
However, let’s not get too caught up in the hype surrounding tri-band technology. For most users, a well-chosen dual-band router is still the best bet – especially if you’re not willing or able to upgrade your internet plan to match the increased capacity. In the end, it all comes down to one question: do we really need this level of performance, or are we just chasing the latest trend? As with any motorcycle enthusiast’s quest for the perfect ride, sometimes less is more.
